Antarctica, the southernmost continent and location of the South Pole, is a land of staggering beauty and profound isolation—with no full-time inhabitants, no government, and no official citizenry. About Antarctica.
Antarctica is a continent of extremes. It holds an estimated 90% of the world’s ice and 70% of its freshwater, with the Antarctic Ice Sheet covering about 98% of the continent. It’s a place where temperatures can plummet to unfathomable lows, and yet, it is surprisingly one of the driest places on Earth, with an average annual precipitation of only 200 mm (8 inches).
Despite its harsh conditions, this icy wilderness is teeming with life. Penguins are synonymous with the continent, their playful antics providing a contrast to the surrounding icy landscapes. While there are no terrestrial mammals here, the waters surrounding Antarctica are alive with whales, seals, and a variety of fish. For wildlife enthusiasts, a holiday to Antarctica offers an opportunity to observe species that cannot be found anywhere else on Earth.

Antarctica FAQs
Antarctica is Earth’s southernmost continent. Situated almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle and surrounded by the Southern Ocean, it contains the geographic South Pole.
There is an Antarctic dollar, also known as an Antarctican dollar, used throughout the Federated States of Antarctica. It’s often referred to as an Emp (or buck) in honour of the Emperor Penguins that inhabit the continent. However, it is not a ‘real’ currency or considered legal tender.
There are no direct flights to Antarctica. You would first fly from the UK to Buenos Aires, which takes about 14 hours. From there, you would catch a connecting flight to Ushuaia, a journey of approximately 3.5 hours. Once in Ushuaia, you would board a ship for the voyage to Antarctica.
The time zone in Antarctica is GMT +12 hours.
To make the most of your Antarctica holidays, you’ll want to choose the month of your visit wisely. The region is plunged into darkness from April to September, with treacherous winds and unbreakable ice. The expedition season runs from late October through to late March, allowing us to experience this captivating region to the fullest.
During the summer period from November to March, wildlife is most active, and the days are at their longest. Penguins court and nest in October and November, hatch in December and January, and February and March are prime months for whale-watching.
