Lapland Christmas Holidays

It doesn’t get much more festive than Lapland at Christmas. Picture twinkling lights, frost-covered trees, and fun in the snow – a quintessential winter experience.

The Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi is known as the official North Pole residence and is well worth a trip for couples and families alike. Children can meet Santa, Mrs Claus, Rudolph, and the elves, as well as being able to send postcards from Santa Claus’s post office.

A short walk from the Village is a magical underground theme park called Santa Park. There you’ll spot fluffy reindeers, take sleigh rides, catch performances, explore Mrs Gingerbread’s Bakery, visit Santa’s office, pass through the elf workshop, and hop on Santa’s train – guaranteed to be a hit with children and grown-ups.

Lapland at Christmas

Lapland is a truly one-of-a-kind destination. It boasts the last wilderness in Europe, is part of the Sami homeland, and is, of course, the home of Santa Claus himself.

It is the largest and most northern part of Finland and is crossed by the Arctic Circle, meaning it is home to natural phenomena like the midnight sun and polar nights, and the much sought-after Northern Lights frequently make an appearance. It’s an Arctic experience unlike any other, especially in the wintertime.

Here’s why Lapland is so special at Christmas, and what you can expect to experience if you visit at this magical time.

Luxury Santa experience

To help make your trip to Lapland extra special, we offer a luxury Lapland santa holiday.

This package includes return flights from Heathrow or Manchester (including luggage), return airport transfers, half boarding, 2 nights in a log cabin, 1 night in a spectacular large thermal glass igloo, a 2-hour husky sleigh safari, a 2-hour Northern Light searching experience, free access to kick sleighs and toboggans, and, of course, the star of the show – a visit to Santa himself at his home.

Get in touch today to create the bespoke trip of your dreams.

Different things to do during the Christmas period

If meeting Father Christmas himself isn’t really your thing, fear not. There are many things to do in Lapland during the festive period that aren’t as traditional. Take the Finnish institution of saunas, for example. Sauna culture is huge in Finland and Lapland is no exception. Saunas are dotted around the place and can be found in most hotels – perfect for unwinding after a busy day of sight-seeing.

The winter period is also a great opportunity to spot the local Arctic animals. Try a reindeer ride or husky safari for that festive experience that’s a little different. Reindeers haven’t always been a symbol of Christmas – they have been an essential part of the Arctic lifestyle for centuries.

For the indigenous Sami people, reindeers have been used for hundreds of years to provide transport and warmth in the challenging Arctic environments. If this nugget of history appeals to you, be sure to visit the Sami reindeer farm where you can learn about the history of reindeer herding.

Activities, experiences & winter sports

Lapland is a beacon for fun activities – you’ll be feeling like a Nordic explorer in no time at all. As a tourist hotspot, Lapland offers many different kinds of tours you can enjoy, from sledding safaris to frozen lake rides on a snowmobile – if you’re feeling brave enough! If you’re ready for a physical challenge, we recommend cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. For something even more unique, try an ‘arctic swim’ aboard the Sampo icebreaker ship.

There are still plenty of things to do for the less adventurous among us. Of course, seeing the Northern Lights can be an activity in itself if you’re prepared to put the time and effort into spotting them. The amethyst mines are a super cool experience and one you’re unlikely to find in many other places. You can either hop on their winter vehicle or find your own way to the amethyst mine where you can hunt for crystals.

For an indoor experience and a break from the harsh winter, head on over to the Arktikum Science Museum which really brings to life how much the Arctic is changing and what life is like being so far north. Bonus tip: the museum has a glass walk-through tunnel that leads to the Ounasjoki River, a prime spot to catch the Northern Lights.

Where to visit in Lapland for Christmas time?

The most popular destination in Lapland at Christmas time is Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland and, as we’ve mentioned, the official hometown of Santa Claus.
