Northern Lights In Finland
The Northern Lights, a natural phenomenon known as the Aurora Borealis, are the famous dancing green lights that can be seen across much of the Arctic night sky. Don’t be fooled though, whilst the Northern Lights seem like they’re close to Earth, they form at altitudes of over 100 kilometres, and seeing them isn’t always a guarantee. It doesn’t have to be cold for you to see the Northern Lights, just dark.
Be warned: it takes a lot of effort to see the Northern Lights. You have to be prepared to seek out a prime spot, move around, and stay outside a long time. The good news is that Northern Finland is a Northern Lights hotspot, so here are our tips.

What our customers say
We booked the Kiruna, Ice Hotel package for my husband's birthday and it was incredible! Everything went without a hitch, from the airport transfers to the snowmobile excursion. We stayed in a Deluxe Suite and it was an inspired idea because not only could we enjoy a proper Ice Room and slept cold one night, but we also enjoyed the luxury of our own bathroom and a sauna!

Northern Lights Finland Holiday
Finland is considered to be the happiest country in the world. From its safety to its greenery to its equalitarian society, it’s a fantastic place to visit for singletons, couples, and families alike. Tourists remark that they enjoy the peaceful vibe in Finland – they bask in the clean air, pure water, and lush woods and forests.
There is so much to enjoy in Finland. In the peak summer months, you won’t find any dark at all, and the Midnight Sun has remarkable energising qualities.
Sauna culture is huge in Finland – there are approximately 3 million saunas, despite the population being just over 5 million – perfect for sweating out any stress and tension on your holiday.
Foraging wild food is another Finnish pastime – it is stipulated in The Everyman’s Rights that everyone is permitted to enjoy nature responsibly, which means anyone can pick berries, collect mushrooms, or go fishing. Because the air in Finland is so clean, these foods grown in the wild are always fresh and delicious. Then, of course, there are the Northern Lights – visible on roughly 200 nights a year.
Where to see the Northern Lights in Finland
To see them in Finland, we suggest heading north to Lapland. Here the lights shine occasionally on a clear night between September and March. If the night sky looks clear and starry, you’re in for a good chance of seeing them. In more southern parts of Finland, the lights are only visible up to 20 nights of the year.
For the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights, be sure to stay outside. Between sunset and dawn, the lights can appear and disappear at any time – they may catch you off-guard! Wrap up warm, though, as it can get very chilly indeed waiting for the lights to appear. For the best view, stay away from the bright lights of buildings and opt for a lakeshore or hilltop.
