Why visit the Northern Lights for your next family adventure
Visiting the Northern Lights is often tragically overlooked as the potential focus of a family adventure. But there are so many reasons why this trip could be perfect for all your family members, children and adults included.
- A Magical Adventure – For young children, seeing the Northern Lights in person will be like true magic, and presents a memorable adventure that they’ll remember fondly in adulthood. It helps that Santa Claus can also be found wherever the Northern Lights are!
- Educational – The Northern Lights are a valuable educational opportunity for parents and children alike. After all, the Lights are all about science, physics, and astronomy! There’s no better way to understand the natural world than experiencing it in person.
- Cultural Immersion – The Northern Lights have long been subject to indigenous legend and superstition. Because the Lights spread across so many different localities and indigenous cultures, wherever you and your family visit, you can immerse yourself in unique worlds, and learn more about different communities as a result. Connecting with different traditions, folklore and ways of life is particularly enriching for children.
Where can I go to see the Northern Lights
With Arctic Direct, there are several places you can go to see the Northern Lights. These include the stunning landscapes of Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Iceland. These are all awe-inspiring countries with the perfect view of the Northern Lights, especially during the long winters.
Things you need to know before booking a Northern Lights trip with my family
Some of the most important things you need to know before booking a Northern Lights trip include:
- Time – The best time to book your trip is between September to April. Unfortunately, you will miss out on the Northern Lights during the summer.
- Weather Forecast – Take guidance from our staff as to when tends to have the best weather or check before you depart so you know when might be best to stay up late!
- What to pack for winter – Always have a list of the most suitable clothes to pack for winter, because the Northern Lights take place in freezing, snowy conditions! We include thermal overalls and boots for certain activities and can do so for the duration of your stay depending on the package type.
- Light Pollution – It will be harder to see the Northern Lights if you’re in an area with lots of artificial light and light pollution but rest assured Arctic Direct will recommend the best spots to maximise your chances of seeing the northern lights!
Activities to do as a family
There are plenty of family-friendly activities to do when visiting the Northern Lights. We at Arctic Direct arrange complementary excursions alongside the Northern Lights like dog sledding, husky hikes, polar bear spotting, whale watching and even a snowmobile safari! Children have enjoyed our Christmas ‘Santa’s Lapland’ package in Finland, where they can meet Santa Claus and his reindeers.
